WHAT IS A CATARACT?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens that blocks it from being able to focus light on the retina. Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over the age of 50, affecting about 22 million Americans, according to Prevent Blindness America.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF I HAVE A CATARACT?

Cataract symptoms can vary from person to person, but the most common symptoms include:

  • Cloudy, blurry or dim vision
  • Increasing difficulty seeing at night or in low light
  • Sensitivity to light and glare
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Faded or yellowish colors
  • The need for brighter light for reading and other activities
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription

Macula Degeneration

Macular degeneration is an eye disorder that gradually causes loss of sharp central vision, causing difficulty in seeing details clearly. Because the condition most often affects people over age 60, it is often called age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and it is the leading cause of vision loss for that age group.    Bender Eyecare performs a comprehensive medical eye exam to detect AMD and determine its stage.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma can be treated with medicine (eye drops, pills), glaucoma laser surgery, traditional glaucoma incisional surgery or a combination of these methods. Glaucoma treatments are designed to decrease elevated intraocular (inside the eye) pressure (IOP), which can damage the optic nerve that transmits visual information to the brain. Our goal is to provide early detection in the hopes to prevent vision loss from glaucoma, which is irreversible.  Early detection, through regular and complete eye exams at Bender Eyecare, is the key to protecting your vision.
